What bulb base does a ceiling fan take?
Ceiling fans most often use E26 (standard medium base) or E12 (candelabra). Look at the socket size — the diameter of the threaded opening tells you which.
Most common answer
Fans with a single large globe or downrod light kit typically use E26 standard base. Fans with multiple small decorative bulbs in arm-style sockets almost always use E12 candelabra base.
How to identify yours
- Look at the empty socket interior — the thread diameter is the base code in millimeters.
- Compare to a coin: an E12 opening is roughly nickel-sized, an E26 opening is roughly quarter-sized.
- Check the fan's label under the canopy or on the wiring compartment.
Socket type by fan style
| Fan style | Likely base |
|---|---|
| Single globe flush-mount kit | E26 medium |
| Multi-arm chandelier-style fan | E12 candelabra |
| Decorative mini-LED strip kit | Integrated (no bulb change) |
Bulb shape guidance
Ceiling fans with enclosed globes should use A19 or smaller. A21 may be too wide to fit inside the glass globe. If the fan label mentions a maximum bulb diameter, use that number to choose shape.
