What devices commonly use it
Flashlights, portable lanterns, large toys, and handheld radios often use C cells for their balance between size and runtime.
What it's interchangeable with
NiMH rechargeable C cells fit in the same slots at 1.2V nominal. Lithium C cells are rarer but exist as drop-ins.
What it's NOT interchangeable with
C cells cannot substitute for D cells — D is physically larger. Using AA/AAA adapters in a C slot is unreliable and not recommended for sustained use.
Common mistakes
- Confusing C with D by sight — they are close in length but D is noticeably wider.
- Using size adapters that cause intermittent contact.
